The One Necessary Thing

What if the very things we do in the name of faithfulness are quietly pulling us away from the one we are trying to honor? In this message, we explore the familiar story of Mary and Martha from Luke 10:38-42, and what unfolds is more than a household disagreement. It is a mirror held up to our own lives. We live in a culture that equates busyness with purpose, and without even realizing it, we can find ourselves running on a treadmill of tasks, responsibilities, and good intentions while the most important thing slips further and further into the background. Martha did not do anything wrong in opening her home to Jesus. Her hospitality was genuine and her effort was real. But somewhere in the middle of all that serving, the work became louder than the one she was working for. The message draws a sharp and honest distinction between serving from a place of connection with God and striving in a way that slowly disconnects us from him. Mary's quiet posture at the feet of Jesus is not passivity. It is a deliberate, countercultural choice to prioritize presence over performance. And Jesus affirms it. The invitation for us is the same one Mary accepted: to choose the good portion daily, to sit before God before we set out to work for him, and to remember that we are not merely his servants but his sons and daughters.
